Mitsubishi Heat Pump and Air Handler Installation in San Mateo
This one is a project we really enjoyed: a Mitsubishi heat pump installation in San Mateo, where an old Carrier gas furnace in a tight utility space was swapped for a 3-ton Mitsubishi heat pump outside and a matching Mitsubishi air handler inside. One system now handles both heating and cooling through the home’s ducts.
From an old furnace to a modern air handler
Here is where we started. At the estimate visit we found a Carrier WeatherMaker furnace squeezed between the wall and the water heater, and we measured it right there so we knew exactly what would fit in that spot. Space was tight, and planning ahead saved a lot of guesswork on install day.

And here is the same corner now. The new Mitsubishi air handler sits on the platform where the furnace used to be. The refrigerant lines are wrapped in insulation and routed neatly down the side, and the condensate drain is piped out in white PVC so the water from cooling season has a clear path away from the unit. A filter cabinet sits right on top, so changing the filter stays easy.
Ductwork was part of the job too. You can see the foil-insulated transitions above and below the air handler that connect it to the existing duct system. Inside the house we worked on a hallway ceiling return opening, taping it off first to keep the paint and ceiling clean while we were up there.
The outdoor unit and the details around it
Outside, the Mitsubishi heat pump sits on a level concrete pad along the side of the house, with enough room around it for airflow and future service. The line set enters the wall through a tidy cover rather than a bare hole, which looks cleaner and protects the lines from weather.
On the electrical side we mounted a labeled service disconnect next to the unit and added a surge protective device just below it. A heat pump has sensitive electronics, and a surge protector is a small, sensible step to help shield them from power spikes. The conduit is strapped straight to the wall so everything stays neat for years.
Finishing up
To round things out we installed a new thermostat to run the system, and the work was done under a city permit. Our crew spent about nine hours on site from start to finish, including setup, testing and cleanup.

Our project manager, Arthur was on-time for the scoping appointment. He took time to understand our needs, investigated the attic, ducts and all the existing equipment, before making any recommendations. “I am extremely pleased with my new Mitsubishi heat pump installed by Nur HVAC. Everyone in California should use a heat pump due to the high cost of electricity, and Nur HVAC should be your installer. My installation was performed in two parts: the upstairs in Mar 2025, then downstairs in May 2026. I commend Nur HVAC for their patience during this protracted and difficult installation. After an initial assessment to determine my needs, the team arrived to plan the installation of the upstairs hardware. They asked many questions to figure it out. It only took 5 days for my on-site representatives Konstantin and Maxim to finish the work, which I felt was clean and neat; the electrical, refrigerant, and condensate lines blended into the existing arrangement seamlessly. By the end of day 5, I had hot and cold air at the touch of a button. About a year later, my remodeling had progressed enough for the installation of the downstairs units. Sadly, other contractors inadvertently cut the 220V supply line to the 2nd floor units. And while they meant well, these other contractors totally messed up the 220V supply line for the 1st floor units, running it to the 2nd floor breaker box instead! Maxim and Konstantin went above and beyond the call of duty, doing jobs that weren't theirs. They re-routed the 1st floor electrical line to the 1st floor breaker box, and got everything working. They were quick to suggest best placement of the indoor units. Additionally, they figured out a far better arrangement of the outdoor unit and refrigerant lines. The installation was more concealed and neat afterwards.”
