Mitsubishi 4-Ton Heat Pump Installation in South San Francisco
This one was a full heat pump installation in South San Francisco, and it was a good example of what a complete swap looks like. The homeowners had an older Carrier furnace up in the attic, and they wanted one system that heats and cools. We replaced it with a Mitsubishi 4-ton heat pump and a matching air handler, and we ran the whole electrical side of the job ourselves.

The outdoor unit
The new Mitsubishi Electric outdoor unit went into a narrow side yard between the fence and the house. We set it on a raised pad so it sits level and stays up off the pavers, and bolted it down. Next to it we mounted a new disconnect, with the wiring run in conduit so nothing is left loose or exposed. A surge protective device was part of the job too, which is cheap insurance for the electronics inside a modern inverter heat pump.
From furnace to air handler in the attic
Here is what we started with: the old Carrier furnace on the attic platform, connected to the existing flex ductwork.
And here is the same spot after the work. The new Mitsubishi air handler sits in a drain pan, the supply side is reconnected to the existing duct, and the condensate line is run in PVC with a trap. You can also see the overflow safety switches on the drain line and in the pan. In an attic install those matter a lot: if the drain ever clogs, the system shuts off before water reaches the ceiling below.
From the side you can see the new insulated line set coming down to the unit and the drain piping supported on a block, so it keeps its slope and does not sag over time.
We kept the line set run neat and insulated all the way from the outdoor unit up into the attic and over to the air handler.
Wrapping up the day
Our two-person crew spent about nine hours on site. That covered pulling out the old equipment, setting the new outdoor unit and air handler, running the line set and condensate drain, and doing all the electrical work. The job was done under a city permit, and a maintenance visit was included as part of the package. By evening the system was running, and the ecobee on the wall was holding a comfortable 68 degrees.
