Rheem Heat Pump Water Heater Installation in San Mateo
This fall we went back to a home in San Mateo we already knew well. Earlier in the year our team installed a new furnace in this same garage and came back for a follow-up service call. This time the job was hot water: a new Rheem heat pump water heater, set in the laundry corner right next to the washer.

Alexey spent the better part of a day on site, about nine hours from start to finish. Most of that time went into the parts you don’t see in a sales brochure: the piping, the supports and the details that make the tank run quietly for years.
Why a heat pump water heater fits a garage like this
A heat pump water heater works differently from a regular tank. Instead of heating water only with a burner or an element, it pulls warmth out of the surrounding air and moves it into the tank. A garage is often a good home for one. There is room around the unit to breathe, and the cool air it blows out doesn’t bother anyone. In this garage the tank stands between the washer and the steps to the house, with plenty of clearance around the fan section on top.
The unit is strapped to the wall with two metal seismic straps, which is standard practice for water heaters here in California. Condensate from the heat pump section is piped away in its own line, so it doesn’t end up on the garage floor.
The piping work behind the tank
The wall behind the water heater is where most of the effort went. We ran new copper lines and wrapped them in black foam insulation, so less heat is lost on the way to the faucets. Flexible stainless connectors take the water into and out of the tank, which makes future service much easier. A blue expansion tank is mounted on the cold side. It gives the water somewhere to go as it heats up and expands, which takes stress off the plumbing.
On top of the tank you can see the brass valve assembly on the inlet, the flex lines and the electrical whip running to the unit in protective conduit. Everything is lined up neatly so the next person who opens it up can tell at a glance what goes where.
One garage, two systems
In the wide shot you can see the Carrier furnace on the right side of the garage. That one went in on our earlier visit. Now the furnace and the water heater share the space, and the homeowners have one crew that knows the whole setup. We always appreciate being invited back. A second job in the same house usually goes smoother because we already know the layout.

“Our old A/C unit went out (dramatically spewing coolant everywhere) in the middle of summer. We contacted Nur HVAC and got them to come take a look at the situation. They recommended replacing our old furnace with a new heat pump along with the new A/C unit. It took a few weeks for a permit, but then they scheduled the job promptly. It was very labor intensive...removing the old equipment, building a new platform with plywood, installing everything. It took 3 full days, but they did an excellent job and cleaned everything up completely when they were finished. The system looks and works so much better now. Workers were polite and respectful. Our project manager, Arthur was on-time for the scoping appointment.
