Mitsubishi 2-Zone Mini-Split Installation in San Francisco
This job took us up to San Francisco for a Mitsubishi 2-zone mini-split installation in a loft-style home with a big shared terrace out back. The goal was simple: real heating and cooling in the two rooms that get used the most, the bedroom and the main living space, without opening up walls for ductwork. One outdoor unit, two wall-mounted indoor units, a crew of two and about nine hours on site.

Setting the outdoor unit on the terrace
The outdoor unit lives on the terrace right beside the back doors. We set it on a raised pad so it stays level and up off the concrete, and tucked it into the corner against the wall so it doesn’t crowd the doorway or take over the patio. There’s still plenty of room to walk in and out, and the fan side faces open air.
From the unit, the refrigerant lines and wiring run inside a line set cover instead of bare insulated pipe. It travels across the wall above the doors and up the side toward the second floor, following the lines of the building so it reads as part of the facade rather than an afterthought. A disconnect sits on the wall within reach of the unit.
We also added a surge protective device to help protect the system’s electronics from power spikes, and the work was done under a city permit.
Two zones, two rooms
Upstairs, the bedroom unit went high on the wall next to the window, just above the curtain rod. It stays out of the way of the furniture and the wallpaper, and blows across the room rather than straight down onto the bed.
The second zone serves the living area, mounted on a column between the big windows. Each room gets its own unit and its own setting, so nobody has to fight over one thermostat.
Checking the work before we leave
Before packing up, we ran both zones and checked the air coming out of each indoor unit with a thermometer. Both were blowing cold air in the 50s, which is what we want to see on a fresh install. It’s a small step, but it tells us both heads are doing their job before we hand the system over.

“NUR HVAC just completed installation of a Mitsubishi heat pump system in my San Francisco home, replacing a 38-year-old Lennox gas furnace. “We used Nur HVAC to replace gas furnace with a heat pump inverter, replace the aging duct work and gas water heater with a heat pump water heater, all in the same contract. Our project manager, Arthur was on-time for the scoping appointment. “I am extremely pleased with my new Mitsubishi heat pump installed by Nur HVAC. Everyone in California should use a heat pump due to the high cost of electricity, and Nur HVAC should be your installer. My installation was performed in two parts: the upstairs in Mar 2025, then downstairs in May 2026. I commend Nur HVAC for their patience during this protracted and difficult installation. After an initial assessment to determine my needs, the team arrived to plan the installation of the upstairs hardware. They asked many questions to figure it out. It only took 5 days for my on-site representatives Konstantin and Maxim to finish the work, which I felt was clean and neat; the electrical, refrigerant, and condensate lines blended into the existing arrangement seamlessly. By the end of day 5, I had hot and cold air at the touch of a button. About a year later, my remodeling had progressed enough for the installation of the downstairs units. Sadly, other contractors inadvertently cut the 220V supply line to the 2nd floor units. And while they meant well, these other contractors totally messed up the 220V supply line for the 1st floor units, running it to the 2nd floor breaker box instead! Maxim and Konstantin went above and beyond the call of duty, doing jobs that weren't theirs. They re-routed the 1st floor electrical line to the 1st floor breaker box, and got everything working. They were quick to suggest best placement of the indoor units. Additionally, they figured out a far better arrangement of the outdoor unit and refrigerant lines. The installation was more concealed and neat afterwards.”
