Carrier Heat Pump Dual Fuel Installation in San Francisco
This job took us up to a roof deck in San Francisco, where we installed a new high efficiency 4-ton Carrier heat pump for heating and cooling. The homeowners already had a Carrier furnace in the attic that was in good shape, so instead of replacing everything we paired the two into a dual fuel central system. The heat pump now does most of the work, and the furnace is there as backup heat when it makes more sense to run gas.

Getting the outdoor unit onto the roof deck
A lot of San Francisco homes don’t have a side yard to spare, and this one was no different. The best spot for the outdoor unit was the upper deck, tucked into the corner against the railing and out of the way of the French doors. Getting a 4-ton condenser up there is a job in itself, so rigging was part of the plan from day one.
Once it was set, we mounted it on a level base, added a service disconnect on the wall next to it and ran the line set in a cover along the siding so it looks tidy from the deck. We also installed a surge protective device to help guard the new equipment against power spikes.

Tying the heat pump into the existing furnace
Up in the attic, the space was already spray-foam insulated, which is a nice place for equipment to live. Here is how the furnace looked at our estimate visit, before any of the work started:
And here it is after. The furnace itself stayed, but now it’s part of a bigger system: the indoor side of the heat pump connects to it, and the two share the same ductwork. From the outside it looks almost the same, which is kind of the point. The homeowners kept a furnace that still had plenty of life left and gained cooling and efficient electric heat on top of it.

A heat pump makes condensate in cooling mode, so we ran a proper drain line with a safety switch at the indoor section. In an attic, that little detail is what keeps water off the ceiling below.

Why dual fuel made sense here
- The existing furnace was worth keeping, so there was no reason to pull it out.
- The heat pump handles cooling and most of the heating year-round.
- The furnace is still there as a second source of heat.
Our crew spent about nine hours on site, and we pulled a city permit for the work. If you have a furnace you like and want to add cooling or move toward electric heat, a dual fuel furnace and heat pump system is worth a conversation. We’re always happy to come out, take a look and talk it through.

“I had a great experience all around with Nur HVAC. Scheduling with Regina was a breeze, and Adlan, our technician, was fantastic. Adlan quickly diagnosed and fixed an issue with our 20-year-old AC unit on the spot without trying to upsell anything. Beyond the quick repair, he took the time to walk me through his process for diagnosing/assessing our AC system as well as the steps for a routine furnace maintenance - I learned a lot along the way. Highly recommend NUR HVAC, and especially Adlan!”

“We used Nur HVAC to replace gas furnace with a heat pump inverter, replace the aging duct work and gas water heater with a heat pump water heater, all in the same contract. Our project manager, Arthur was on-time for the scoping appointment. He took time to understand our needs, investigated the attic, ducts and all the existing equipment, before making any recommendations. He designed the optimal system for our house to be cost effective, provide highest comfort and be energy efficient. He was not pushy and was upfront about the ballpark estimates and timeline. He also walked us thru the various rebates that are available for the replacements from local utilities. Arthur's quote was very competitive, in fact better than those quoted to us by Costco referred contractors. Nur's installation crew - Eldar, Bhakridin, were very professional and thorough. They didn't rush the job and left the job site clean and clutter free each day. They accommodated our requests for placing the electrical wires and conduits so they are not in the way. All the equipment both indoor and outdoor were cleanly laid out, secured and wiped down before hand off. Always smiling and respectful, one of the best installation crew we have had. As a white glove contractor they took care of all the permitting, inspection paperwork w/ the city, all the paper work for us to receive the rebates. They even completed the warranty registration with the manufacturers for all the equipment! We would highly recommend Arthur and Nur HVAC to anyone in the Bay Area needing heating and cooling solutions. We would definitely be going back to them ourselves when the need arises.”

“These guys are the best. After checking around, we went with NUR for a new Carrier furnace and a/c installation. Their pricing was fair, no surprises, and the quality of the installation was excellent. Even during the permit process the town inspector commented on how good everything looked. Here is the big thing: Everyone I dealt with at NUR was friendly, courteous, and professional. There were a couple of glitches along the way which happens with a project like this, but NUR was always responsive and took care of things promptly. I couldn't ask for more and can highly recommend.”

“NUR HVAC just completed installation of a Mitsubishi heat pump system in my San Francisco home, replacing a 38-year-old Lennox gas furnace. I couldn't be more pleased with the quality of the work and the professionalism shown during the process. In particular, I wanted to commend Artur and Vladimir, the NUR technicians who did the beautiful install. Both guys were extremely polite and respectful, for example, putting on shoe covers whenever they entered the house. Artur was also very fastidious in running the ancillary electrical feeds to my main service panel. What a neat job! Fedor, who came to do the initial assessment, was a great resource and answered all my questions regarding scheduling, warranty, maintenance, etc. He offered several options during the bidding process without any pressure to come to a quick decision or attempts at “upselling.” In the end, their quote was very competitive, and fair given the quality of the work and the final product. Being a Mitsubishi Diamond Contractor, NUR was able to offer a 12-year warranty on parts and labor. The bottom line is NUR is a top quality outfit and it was easy to see that they take great pride in their work and genuinely care about their customers. NUR may be the best contractor I’ve ever used. Definitely, 5-Star!”
“I am extremely pleased with my new Mitsubishi heat pump installed by Nur HVAC. Everyone in California should use a heat pump due to the high cost of electricity, and Nur HVAC should be your installer. My installation was performed in two parts: the upstairs in Mar 2025, then downstairs in May 2026. I commend Nur HVAC for their patience during this protracted and difficult installation. After an initial assessment to determine my needs, the team arrived to plan the installation of the upstairs hardware. They asked many questions to figure it out. It only took 5 days for my on-site representatives Konstantin and Maxim to finish the work, which I felt was clean and neat; the electrical, refrigerant, and condensate lines blended into the existing arrangement seamlessly. By the end of day 5, I had hot and cold air at the touch of a button. About a year later, my remodeling had progressed enough for the installation of the downstairs units. Sadly, other contractors inadvertently cut the 220V supply line to the 2nd floor units. And while they meant well, these other contractors totally messed up the 220V supply line for the 1st floor units, running it to the 2nd floor breaker box instead! Maxim and Konstantin went above and beyond the call of duty, doing jobs that weren't theirs. They re-routed the 1st floor electrical line to the 1st floor breaker box, and got everything working. They were quick to suggest best placement of the indoor units. Additionally, they figured out a far better arrangement of the outdoor unit and refrigerant lines. The installation was more concealed and neat afterwards.”
“We recently used Nur HVAC to install a new heat pump and completely redo the ductwork for our whole-home HVAC system, and the experience was outstanding from start to finish. Fedor was incredibly knowledgeable and guided us through every step of the process—from initial planning to final completion. He was always available to answer our questions, no matter how small, and his oversight gave us total confidence in the quality of the work being delivered. Eldar handled the installation and did a fantastic job. The work was completed efficiently, with great attention to detail and craftsmanship, and everything was finished right on schedule. We couldn’t be happier with the results and would absolutely recommend Nur HVAC to anyone looking for reliable, high-quality HVAC services.”
“All their five star reviews are true. I had a great experience with Nur, from the day they came over for a quote, to the day of the City inspection. They even registered the warranty for me, without even having to ask. Shalai and his partner, who installed the mini-split ductless unit, were extraordinarily neat, punctual and friendly. You could tell they love their craft. Artur who came for the estimate, was knowledgeable and did a clear and thorough contract. Shomurod who came to meet the City inspector was also super professional. (By the way, the electric inspector commented TWICE on how clean the connections were.) Communication at every stage was perfect, and I'm super pleased with them.”
“Loved my technician. Very honest. He replaced my gas heater and AC unit. Turned out great. Gas furnace wont be available after next year. So this should last another 25 years before I have to upgrade my panel to support a heat pump product. Dodged a bullet. I recommend this company. Susan Lacy Municipal Construction Inspector”
“I highly recommend Nur HVAC! They upgraded my old split furnace HVAC with a heat pump HVAC retrofit. Fedor and the installation team showed outstanding professionalism and craftsmanship in all phases of the project: * Detailed initial project scoping tailored to my home's needs * Fast, friendly communication from start to finish * Solved new complexities we encountered on site * Collaboratively discussed alternative solutions, never felt pushy * High work quality I would absolutely choose Nur again for future HVAC work.”
“After 18 years our Air Conditioning System failed. We, of course, called Nur HVAC and were glad to see Islam again. He rapidly diagnosed that the AC compressor failed and had to be replaced. However, the AC system was so old that the compressor only had a 1 year warranty and the refrigerant in use 18 years ago is only available for legacy repairs (This is to protect the Ozone layer). We could have replaced the AC system, but the heating system was equally old and likely to fail. The cost to move to a full all electric HVAC system was a few dollars more than just replacing the AC system and it would eliminate our use of gas for heating and take advantage of the recently installed Solar Panels. So the house has a new fully electric HVAC system installed by Nur HVAC. Islam came and took the measurements so the system could be ordered and priced. Soon Alex and the installation team arrived to install the system. The quality of the installation and the care Alex and team took during the custom wiring, new refrigerant lines, new moisture drains, new thermostats, system setup and calibration was outstanding. Alex made sure that the air flow for both heating and cooling was measured and far better than the previous systems. Alex made sure to keep us informed as progress was being made and they managed to keep the house clean during the install. Again Nur HVAC exceeded expectations with a very high quality install at a fair price. A project of this size had a few bumps but this appeared to have been done to provide a quality install with attention to detail. This company has superb knowledgeable professionals working for it from service to installation. I highly recommend Nur HVAC.”
“I recently hired NUR HVAC to remove an old HVAC system, correct issues from a previous improper installation, and install a new system with air conditioning in my new home. From start to finish, my experience was outstanding. Fedor was fantastic to work with. He took the time to explain everything thoroughly, answered all of my questions, and kept me informed throughout the entire process. The communication, quality inspections, and overall professionalism exceeded my expectations. The installation team, Vitaly and Leandro, were equally impressive. They removed the old system and installed the new one with great attention to detail. They were always punctual, courteous, and clearly very knowledgeable about their work. Their craftsmanship was meticulous, and it was obvious they took pride in doing the job right. At the end of each day, they cleaned up after themselves and left the work area neat and organized. It’s not often that you find a company that combines excellent communication, quality workmanship, and outstanding customer service, but NUR HVAC delivered on all three. The new system is working great, and I have confidence that the job was done correctly. I would highly recommend NUR HVAC to anyone looking for HVAC replacement, air conditioning installation, or service. Five stars without hesitation.”
“I had an old furnace replaced with a new heat pump and air handler. I was impressed by their initial on-site inspection: the representative noticed that the new air handler would be wider than the existing one, which would require that our water heater be moved several inches for clearance. No other company noticed that. Overall, communication was excellent. They answered all questions and provided the city work permit application number so I could track approval process with the city. Work went smoothly and was finished in a few days, much sooner than what I had anticipated. Very good experience, would recommend to anyone.”
